Fireworks season used to mean one night. Now it starts in late October, rumbles on through the weekends either side of Bonfire Night, then does it all again on New Year’s Eve. If you have a dog, that’s weeks of flinching at every bang. Even without one, there’s a lot to be said for sitting the whole thing out.
Our cottages sit high above the Conwy Valley, far from the towns and villages where the displays happen. On a clear night you might catch distant, silent sparkles on the horizon, and that’s the whole show. Quiet skies, space to breathe and a hot tub under the stars instead of a countdown in a crowd.

Why It’s So Quiet Up Here
The cottages sit on the hillside above Eglwysbach, with a one-acre shared garden and nothing beyond it but fields and sky. There are only two cottages on site, so there are no other guests’ plans to work around, no resort entertainment and no display in the car park. The nearest organised fireworks are far enough away that what reaches you is a flicker, not a bang.
That distance matters most to dogs, but it works just as well on people who’ve had enough noise by the end of December.
Bringing Your Dog
Both cottages are warm, single-storey retreats, which suits older dogs or any dog that struggles with stairs. Inside there are comfortable sofas and large windows for valley-gazing; outside, the one-acre garden gives them room to stretch their legs while you stand there with a cup of tea watching them play.
One thing to know: the garden is not fully enclosed because the driveway remains open. It leads onto a quiet country lane, well away from the cottages, but dogs that may wander should still be supervised outside or kept on a lead. Up to two dogs per cottage, four across both. Walks From the Doorstep
No need to bundle everyone into the car. A network of trails starts at the door: a gentle 25-minute lakeside loop for a morning potter, an hour-long hill walk that earns you the full sweep of the valley and longer all-day routes that connect into the wider Conwy Valley.
For a New Year’s Day leg-stretch further afield, the Llanrwst Riverside Path is flat, crisp and mindful, and the Llyn Elsi circuit above Betws-y-Coed turns properly magical on a frosty morning. Wildlife fans should head for RSPB Conwy, where the hides are heated and the lagoons fill with wintering wildfowl. Or stay put and watch the red kites soar over the valley from your hot tub, wingspans not far off two metres.

Warm Rewards: Pubs, Tearooms and Real Fires
After a cold walk, find a fire. We rate the Ty Gwyn Hotel and the Pont-y-Pair Inn in Betws-y-Coed, and the historic Groes Inn in the valley. For a non-pub option, Tu Hwnt i’r Bont in Llanrwst, glowing red with its winter ivy, does tea and cake beside the river.

The Pool, the Hot Tub and the Optional Cold Plunge
For the brave, a New Year’s Day dip is a tradition, and the Fairy Glen near Betws-y-Coed is a dramatic (and very cold) spot for one; access arrangements there have been changing, so check before you go.
For everyone else, the heated indoor pool is a few steps across the courtyard from your door, open 24 hours with no schedule to fit around. Swim off the mince pies, then finish in your own private hot tub watching the stars come out over the mountains. On the days the weather wins, the pool rescues the whole day.
Seeing In the New Year, Quietly
By December 31st, most of us are spent. Christmas was lovely, but it was also cooking, hosting, travelling and managing everyone’s expectations. If another night of crowded pubs, overpriced tickets and a hangover to start the year doesn’t appeal, this is the alternative: a walk in the frost, dinner you actually wanted and midnight in the hot tub under a dark sky. Several guests have made exactly that their tradition.
You’ll wake on January 1st to frost in the valley, snow on the tops if you’re lucky, and mist rising off the fields. Refreshed, not depleted.
A little planning helps. Stock up on food and drink before New Year’s Eve, as most local shops close on January 1st; Llanrwst is about 15 minutes away and Betws-y-Coed about 20 for supplies. Pack warm layers, waterproofs, proper boots and your swimwear.

Is this suitable for families with young children?
Yes. The indoor pool keeps children entertained whatever the weather and easy walks start right outside the door.
